8 Thing to do After Finding Out You’re Pregnant
- Breathe – Expecting a baby is a huge transition for anyone, especially parents who weren’t planning for a baby. Just take a deep breath and let it all sink in before you do anything rash. You’re going to experience a roller coaster of emotions, and that’s okay! Trust yourself—you’ll do great.
- Research – If you’re pregnant, or thinking about becoming pregnant, it’s important to find a healthcare provider who you trust. Do your research, read reviews, and make sure the provider is a good fit for you. If at any time you or your partner feel uncomfortable, it’s okay to switch providers.
- Breaking the News – When should you announce your pregnancy? Some couples want to share the news right away, while others prefer to wait. The decision is yours and your partner’s, and there’s no right or wrong answer. The first few months of pregnancy can be stressful, so it’s perfectly okay to keep the news to yourselves for a while.
- Finances – Babies are expensive, and the idea of buying everything they need can be overwhelming. But don’t feel like you need to buy everything right away. Babies don’t need a lot during the first few months of life. Make a list of necessities, and then plan and wait to get everything they need.
- Classes – Child care classes are a great way to prepare for the arrival of your new baby. Some classes are covered by insurance, but it’s a good idea to shop around. In addition to child care classes, there are also breastfeeding, car seat safety, and infant CPR courses that may be available for you and your partner.
- Birth Plan – Making a birth plan is optional, but it’s always good to be prepared. Decide who you want in the room with you and what you want done for your body and baby. It’s also a good idea to have someone advocate for you during labor.
- Trust Your Body – If at any time during your pregnancy you feel uncomfortable or something doesn’t feel right, get checked by your care provider. This is your body and your baby. Don’t be afraid to express your concerns.
